Extraordinary., 2010-03-27 There are quite a few authors who can make me laugh. There are some who can make me cry. There are even some who can do both. But John Irving is the only one who can make me laugh out loud AND cry at the same time. A Prayer For Owen Meaney is my favourite book of all time. No competition. Owen is a character you won't forget, even years after you're read the book. Absolutely brilliant novel...

Cricket history with a sense of humor, 2010-06-02 Great book by cricket pundit (and former bowler) Simon Hughes. If you like your histories mixed with humor and plenty of British pop culture references, this is the book for you (even if you are Australian).

A great basic text, 2008-08-05 By its very nature physics is a a complex subject and I am always a little dubious of any review that claims to take the uninitiated from ignorance to a full understanding of the universe in less than 300 pages.
In this respect I dont think John Gribbin entirely succeeds either but In search of Scrodingers cat certainly takes a good stab at it. I defy anyone to read even half the book and not come away with a very different view of how the world or indeed worlds work. I would certainly recomend this book to any student about to embark on a Physics degree - Much lighter reading than the standard texts but at the same time provides powerful (and more importantly memorable) illustrations of all the basic principles.

Cheeky And Charming, 2010-03-11 I was reluctant to give this book a go, but a good friend recommended it to me and I finally caved and purchased a copy (albeit it eBook form). Now, I'm not usually one for romance books, but this is a romance book with a twist. Clarke is clever in his implementation of the love tale, using it as a sub-plot to the actually story of a year in France.
Certainly this book has a niche; that is to say people that have spent time in France, or studied French culture (the latter fo me). Having said that the book is a fun read for anyone, but I think to understand some of his humour you have to be aware at least a little of French life.
I'd say keep 'A Year in the Merde' as a summer read. I finished in a couple of days, sat on the beach or by the pool and it was fun -- even if I did get a few odd looks as I laughed out loud or sniggered. Pick up a copy for a fiver and have a laugh.

In The Kitchen, 2009-11-06 Monica Ali's latest novel focuses on chef Gabe Lightfoot who is being pulled in different directions by recent events and the variety of people who influence his life, with dramatic consequences. It is beautifully written, carrying the reader along on the 'out of control' ride that is Gabe's life. The story takes us between the contrasting worlds of the London hotel and family life in a small town in Lancashire and the tensions that arise. We are introduced to a variety of complex characters who enrich the story and make the reader want to know more.

I'm halfway through and ready to do a road trip, 2009-09-10 Such a great insight to American life. I'll be doing my own road trip in a couple of weeks (which is why I bought the book). I'll find out when I come back how close the book is to the America of today.
It's such an easy book to read. I've read a couple of Bill Bryson's books previously and they all have that same easy style.
I recommend this book, even if you have no plans on going to America. I'm not sure the reception in America itself has been too great though as he is very open and honest about what he thinks and a sees! This is what makes it all the more interesting.

Simply Written For Children - Immensely Powerful, 2010-06-20 Clearly a story, as the 9 / 10 year-old characters are as naive as a baby.
It just works.

Writing at its' best, 2009-11-03 As always with Kate very real characters but the beauty is in the transition between time periods. The links between the generations that are not only cleverly done but leave you with a feeling of the era.
Clever, clever writing with lots of twists and turns that have you thinking even when the pages are closed.
