this game is great, i think it beats MW2 in all aspects, the campain is brilliant i love it, its nothing like cod you can't just run in rambo style and kill everything, you have to think before you act look around at how many enemies are around if it best to shoot them head on or flank them. the graphics are fantastic as good as MW2 if better, the MP is unbeatable, the game types are brilliant lots of choice, but the thing that win its for me online is you have to work as a team and i love that and i know some people don't but i do and that's my opinion. a great game a must buy.

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 What PC gamers have been waiting for., 2010-03-13
Its been a long time since PC gamers have gotten a top notch fps game that needed reaction and player skill to be successful in game. BC2 delivers on that by not dumbing down the PC version to cater for console gamers.

Graphics 5/5
They are simply stunning in parts and doesn't effect the fps with how good it looks. AMD phenonm x4 @3.2ghz with an Ati 4870 @1920x1080 it plays silky smooth around 45-50fps while hitting 60fps more then often in some parts. And that's with maxed settings.

Sound 5/5
Finaly! A game that uses my 5.1 creative Hi-fi system. BC2 it using HDR sound and it really does sound amazing. When i was playing singleplayer i remember keep saying to myself dam this game sounds so real because it literally does. You won't find a game with better sound effects then BC2.

Gameplay 5/5
Its at another level the frostbite 2 engine is very impressive and makes the game a hell of alot more fun to play. The single player which i didn't care for is pretty good, i found myself not even playing the multiplayer for 2 days because the single player was alot of fun. Now for the multiplayer. The competitive spirit has returned back when PC gaming was top dog with Counter stike, SOF2, Raven Shield, Battlefiled 2. Those type of games were lost after the so called next gen consoles came along and game deveolpers turned there back on us for more money. Dice has raised the bar and raised my faith in PC gaming online.

The only bad point i have with BC2 is the servers. Sometimes you can't connect and its very slow but EA said there going to fix this, as matter of fact the servers go down today so they can add more hardware and what not to speeds things up. I can't really complain that much like others do becasue i understand its only been a little over a week. And apparently it was reported that the PC version has more then the Xbox and PS3 players online combined.

I like to say i know my FPS games and COD MW is just a hitbox shooter for noobs who cant aim. While bad company 2 will show COD players how sucky they really are without the game engine that shoots for them.

Heavy Rain. The game I've been going on and on about to anyone and eveyone who'll listen, the game I've mentioned several times on this blog, the game I've heaped mountains of unreasonable expectations on, is here...

...and it blew my mind.

Its gameplay is unique, its approach to story is unique in that its all about the story rather than the high score or the next headshot. Its handling of emotion is unparralled in gaming. It looks gorgeous too.

The only reason I'm not still playing it and unlocking another of its multiple endings is that the PSN is down and a trophy error is preventing me from loading it up.

I've mentioned before why this game is so important, not just to me but to the entire gaming industry. In summary, its pointing the way, maybe not in terms of design but in terms of tone. This is what this medium can do at the highest level, unmatched interaction storytelling based on a massive range of emotions.
What I love about Heavy Rain is the way consquence is engineered. There are no game overs or retrys. You carry on regardless of wether a character dies, screws up, you make a specific moral decision on in their shoes, or they succeed. This means when you arrive at the ending the context and weight behind every decision is so much more profound because it belongs to you. Your choices, your mistakes. And, in the end, your feelings.

Thats why Heavy Rain is both hard to concisely explain and experience with constraints. You need to sit down and experience it in it's entirety. And probably more than once too.

I mean, how many games can boast of scenes in which the player (spoilers): changes a nappy, prevents a suicide, has a shower, kills an innocent man and has to live with it, cuts of his finger, has sex, sits bored, plays with his kids, loses his son in a shopping center, performs first aid, cooks an omelete, saves a life, takes drugs, kicks the habit, frees a innocent man, plays piano, makes an architectural drawing, plays basketball, falls in love, dies permanently. And you feel every minute of it, its powerful stuff.

Olly

The story is great, and original for a JRPG. I imagine that's not the biggest talking point about this game, and I don't want to give away too much.

I shouldn't need to tell you that if you don't like JRPGs or cutscenes to stay away, this game is not for you.

The first thing you notice is that the graphics are absolutely amazing. Even if you think that game is rubbish, you have to concede that it is the best looking piece of rubbish you've ever seen. It puts other games to shame. The textures are crisp, the lighting is fantastic, and the animation is absolutely unmatched, not even by the glorious Uncharted 2. Square Enix also did a really good job with the localisation. You can tell they spent lots of time getting it just right. The voice acting is also great, they have that JRPG feel, but is so slick.

Conceptually, it is one of the best Final Fantasys. The story of the fal'Cies is tragic, but doesn't descend into emotional nonsense, and the character Sazh gives it some much needed comic relief, without being a massive stereotype and actually having a convincing story of his own. There is so much other JRPGs could learn from this about storytelling.

The big issue is that so many features have been removed from previous Final Fantasies that this doesn't even feel like a JRPG. For example, there are no towns, or even any NPCs you can interact with except for main characters. For me, it feels like Square Enix streamlined the Final Fantasy Experience. What I mean is that, in the last final fantasy game that I played (Crisis Core) there was very little reason to talk to random people. Occasionally one may give you an item, or something may actually happen, but most of the time they say nothing important. It wasn't like, say, Pokemon, where you can't afford to not talk to people because the person you don't talk to has the one item you need. It was just something I stopped doing fairly quickly, as I didn't see the point. Towns, therefore, would have no purpose except as a hub for shops/other services you may need like rests, which can simply be dotted around the levels and dungeons.

The game is EXTREMELY linear. There is almost no going back. But why would you want to? The story is very engrossing, and there is simply no need to revisit old battlegrounds. To put it simply, Lightning would not go back. So why should the player? All this would do is distract from the main quest. And If there's one thing that disrupts immersion in rpgs, it's having to stop on your epic quest to save the world, to help an old woman get her cat out of a tree, or some other mindless (often 'fetch') quest which anyone else within the universe could do. There's no need to go back for such pointless quests, and the storyline and chracter development benefits from the focus.

Some may argue that this isn't a JRPG. Well, to them I would say 'Get over the fact that it's not like other JRPGs and begin to enjoy it'. Instead of focusing on what the game isn't, you should focus on what Final Fantasy has become - a streamlined, cinematic epic without the archaic JRPG archetypes which only served to increase the play time and as a way of giving the player items.

Finally, if you have an Xbox and a PS3, for the love of God, get this on PS3. The Xbox version has 4 discs and a massive install, without the resolution or full-hd video of the PS3 version with no install. It seems to have been designed for the PS3 and then ported at the last minute.

Quite simply, if you do not have a motion plus and you are playing games that are compatible with it, you will miss out. The extra sensitivity really helps, and in games like sports resort, it works great. eg: Just twisting your wrist when you are bowling puts a neat spin on the ball.

BioShock 2 (Xbox 360)

BioShock 2 (Xbox 360)

Rated: Suitable for 18 years and over
By Take 2 Interactive

The original shocked the video gaming world by not only being a great first person shooter, but also an intelligent one. Now one of the greatest stories in interactive fiction is getting another chapter, with a sequel set ten years later.

You play the original Big Daddy - a more independently minded prototype to the giant deep sea divers from the first game. The undersea world of Rapture has been taken over by the mysterious Big Sister, who has begun to kidnap children from coastal cities around the world.

A much larger range of plasmid powers are now available, as well as more standard weapons and the Big Daddy's iconic rivet gun and drill. The game's real conflict is emotional though, as you are once again forced to make a decision between sacrificing Little Sisters or protecting them and making your task even harder. Bioshock 2 will make you think, and not just about tactics.

  • Atlas shrugged: The award-winning story-telling of Bioshock continues with a new hero and a new threat in the underwater dystopia of Rapture.
  • Evolve yourself: New plasmids, including new dual-wielded attacks, let you unleash amazing powers but at the cost of your humanity.
  • Cry Little Sister: As the first Big Daddy you are far faster than the other lumbering giants, but equipped with the same weapons and the ability to venture onto the ocean floor.
  • Big boss: Defend yourself against the constant attacks of Big Sister by setting up traps and ambushes, but always making sure you have an escape route!
  • Separate lives: For the first time Bioshock has its own multiplayer mode - featuring a completely different story and created by developer Digital Extremes (Unreal Tournament 2004).
