The real problem with this book is that after you finish it, you want everyone to read it. Yet you also want to keep a copy. It's filled with fascinating insights from the world of research, turned into practical examples of how to apply these things to your life. One that resonated with me (in the parenting section) is that telling children they are clever actually makes them perform worse. Simply because if the child tries something and FAILS it must be validation that they are not clever after all. My mum went pale when I told her. Three bright children and not an academic qualification between them...

I loved this book and think that there must be at least one thing within its pages to inspire every person reading it to improve their life, even in the tiniest way. If you enjoyed reading books such as Freakanomics, Predictably Irrational and Outliers you'll probably love this.

Although this is not a life-changing book it is a very good demonstration that sometimes we know less than we think we do. Within our model of the world we tend to have drawn conclusions from very little experience, which whilst it satisfies us does not satisfy the scientist, who needs to prove what is and what is not right. The book systematically covers some important matters and what the research says about it. The book is meant as a popular and entertaining read so the subject matter covers what is funny, surprising and sometimes contrary to popular belief or what your instincts tell you. What it isn't is a serious call for you to change your ways because of what the science is telling you. For instance, somebody's name has a statistical influence so that if your surname is Hart, you will be statistically more represented as a doctor than as say a dentist. Interesting yes, amusing in some of his examples but what can you change about that? It is like readers digest, entertaining, interesting, you want to read bits out to people and you can dip in and out. Read and enjoy.

A very logically explained book of facts that could improve your life. After reading it myself I gave it to my sister and she is finding it really useful as well.

This came to me by accident and I'm endlessly grateful for that! Having purchased the audio version, I went on to buy the book as I wanted to be able to dip in and out as I chose. This is not the usual self-help book of worn out cliches by another well-funded, over-promoted individual (however well-meaning they might be!), this book actually gives you facts and information that is useable! If only I'd found this 20 years ago I'd be a lot better off - not just financially, but also in my development of life-skills.
