Product Description
The second instalment in the Millennium Trilogy sees Lisbeth Salander wanted for murder while Blomkvist tries desperately to clear her name.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Stieg Larsson gleaned a remarkable degree of success before his too-early death in 2004. He had delivered to his publisher three remarkable crime novels; the initial book in his ‘Millennium’ sequence, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, had enjoyed an unprecedented success in his native Sweden before the translation took the UK by storm. Larsson had made a considerable mark as a crusading journalist, with a speciality in tackling political extremist groups. But he offered assistance to many people and groups who he felt were vulnerable – something of a modern hero, in fact.

One of Larsson's key achievements as a writer was to create an innovative kind of heroine for the crime novel. His unconventional sleuth, the highly intelligent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, is a confrontational young woman, whose Goth accoutrements sometimes alienate those around her (except the individuals she opts to have sexual relations with – strictly, that is, according to the rules she lays down). In the second book in the Millennium sequence, The Girl Who Played with Fire (as in its its predecessor), Lisbeth's closest ally is the older journalist Mikael Blomqvist, even though she has abruptly ended her emotional relationship with him. Lisbeth has left all she knows behinds her and has begun a relationship with a gauche young lover. But after a grim revenge run-in with a man who has abused her, she becomes a suspect in three murders, and is the subject of a nationwide search. Blomqvist, however, is convinced of her innocence (he has just been responsible for a blistering report on the sex trafficking industry in Sweden), and is determined to help her – whether she wants his help or not.

As with Larsson’s earlier book, this is highly compelling fare, with tautly orchestrated suspense; it's often grisly and uncompromising (not a problem for many readers), and the massive text may be longer than is good for it, but Larsson admirers won't begrudge the late author a word, and will be impatient for the third (and, regrettably, concluding) book in the sequence. --Barry Forshaw

This is my favourite book of the millennium trilogy. Although I enjoyed reading all 3 of the books I thought the ending was really dragged out in the first and third book and that there was a lot of unnecessary material at the end of the books. However, this book doesn't have a slow beginning like the last one so you are immediately drawn into the book and the ending isn't over explained as with the other books.

Wonderful story as part of the trilogy. Am suffering sleep deprivation as I couldnt but this or the other two down. Now the hubbys turn on holiday to read them all so he will leave me in peace to people watch and shop on my own!!

This isn't really a review of the book itself - which is good, if not quite as exciting as the original (I'd give it 3.5 stars) - more a review of the audio CD for those considering buying it.

I enjoyed the first part of the 'Millennium Trilogy' but didn't really have time to wade through 500+ pages of the second book. So I thought I'd get the CD to listen to in the car on the way to work. I bought the abridged version which runs to about seven hours, and having discussed it with friends it seems to follow the actual text pretty closely.

Martin Wenner's reading is excellent with some wonderfully funny touches - check out his way of saying 'OK' when Blomqvist is surprised with something. It is also clear and dramatic. His voice has an engaging quality and was easy to listen to.

I do have a couple of complaints. The track divisions on the CDs could have been better. Most are 5-7 minutes long and sometimes the track continues even though the end of a chapter is reached. Some of Martin Wenner's accents are also very dodgy! Lisbeth in particular took a while to get used to. And whose idea was it to give characters from northern Sweden northern British voices? The Liverpudlian characters sound really out of place.

But if you can get past that, as I eventually did, this is a great way to continue the story. I've already ordered the final CD. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Totally gripping novel from an amazing author, so sad he was taken from us far too early.
I 'fell' into the first of the series, 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' by chance as my better half was struggling to get into it and boy am I glad I stuck with it.
The central characters, particularly Lisbeth Salander, are so complex and the story twists and turns, you just never know what's coming next.
I can't wait to read the final installment, but am putting it off because then there'll be no more. I've read many thrillers by other authors and quite frankly they just don't get close.
An ABSOLUTE MUST READ!

After a brilliant first book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo you worry about the second offering from the author. Will it be as good , will I be disappointed? This is not the case at all the second book in the Millenium series is even better than the first. The book is enthralling and fast pacing unlike the first book there is action from start to finish. This book also develops the intriguing character of Lisbeth Salander and looks at her background. As the story develops the affection you had for Lisbeth in the first book grows.

I believe that I enjoy this writer so much because of the mature writing, this is unlike other novels that clearly have been written as a scene play this has beautiful description that developes the surroundings and the characters fully.

You can easily read this book without the first however, I defy anyone to read the second book and not immediatly want to read the third. A truly wonderful book.
