Editorial Review
Amazon.co.uk Review
Buoyed by the runaway commercial success of Led Zeppelin IV, Jimmy Page used this 1973 follow-up to hone his already impressive production skills, and the result was a collection sporting an impressively expansive sound. Benefiting--especially on tracks such as "Dancing Days Are Here Again", "The Crunge" and "Over the Hills and Far Away"--was Zeppelin's always underrated rhythm section: thunder-fisted drummer John Bonham and rock-solid bassist John Paul Jones. Jones also emerged here as a secret weapon on keyboards with his subtle work on more pensive fare such as "No Quarter" and "The Ocean". And the goofy "D'yer Ma'ker" showed that Zeppelin had more of a sense of humour than most people ever gave them credit for. --Billy Altman

What a fabulous album even if you do count The Crunge and D'yer Mak'er as jokey songs...An album of imaginative and brilliant hard rock with many softer more lyrical elements I need not name as if this suberb effort were not known to grey or younger Zeppelin fans and just fantastic with classic songs abounding many another would have given their eyeteeth to have written and for me any album that leaves a boring blues song out is a better Led Zeppelin set and there is not one here...The songs encapsulate Rock, folk and prog rock strains that the band combine flawlessly as early Queen and some notable others I will not note,did...II,IV,Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti are the Must-Hears from the Led Zeppelin cannon and I truly cannot recommend this wonderful collection highly enough...Personally,I can live with a little reggae,a very little if sandwiched on an lp that lightens the mood a bit like an interlude between the epic and lyrical songs on offer here...No need to mention the class musicianship,So I will -Even the sleeve is a classic work as evocative as the songs it perfectly matches with its mythical imagery...A great, great album.

Mr.Page..taking the wrong route on the crossroads on this one..still some great songs..but don't dabble in Reggae..remember this is Heavy Rock!!

Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5 Under-rated, REALLY under-rated!!, 2010-05-15
Brought this album to continue my Led Zep education, having started at the beginning and doing the albums in sequence (which seems right in order to understand the journey, musically, that Zeppelin took as a band), not a single album to this point had left me in any doubt that this is one of the greatest rock bands ever to walk the planet.
Anyway, to this album, being a massive Led Zep fan i, of course, had expectations for this album. It didn't disappoint. Granted, there are a couple of odd tracks that don't seem to sit too comfortably on the album (The Crunge and D'yer Mak'er spring to mind for me), but the brilliance of tracks such as The Song Remains the Same and The Rain Song along with No Quarter and The Ocean mean that this is still a stunning album. In some ways tracks such as the The Crunge add to the appeal of the album as a) they are completely different to what you expect and, b) they make the album unique.
I think this album appears to me to be vastly under-rated and, if you love Zep, then you will love this album as wholeheartedly as their other works. If you are new to Zep then you may wish to start with Led Zep IV or Physical Graffiti but this is still not a bad introduction as it certainly encompasses the Led Zeppelin variety you will find on any of their albums and the first track has to be up there with possibly one of the best album intro's of all time.
Well recommended.

I was listening to this album earlier and was pleasantly surprised. I'd honestly forgotten how good this album was! As with every other great albums, all the songs here are quality. Song remains the same is a brilliant opener, rain song is beautiful, over the hills is so utterly grooving you probs wont be able to keep still. Dyer Maker is best! Through and through an amazing album.

The diversity of this album is immense, altho everything seems to still fit into place and the album flows perfectly! You can still here the blues roots, along with folk and world influences. Its as though zep master everything they attempt. This album is a testament to their virtuosity.

I've read like one or two bad reviews for this album out of 50 - i really cant understand it! Have they listened to this album properly? Obviously underappreciated. Led Zep didnt try to pull off another led zep IV, which i think is a good thing. Overall the album has just a feeling of being at leisure, really relaxed, upbeat, perfect for a warm summers day, just chilling in the sun...

Don't hesitate to buy this album! You really wont regret it! This album is a rock classic, just superb

This is Led Zeppelin standing tall at the top of their stairway. As good as it gets. Hard pounding with finesse. High energy and imaginative guitar turnarounds never heard before in rock history. Leeway for contrast and fantasy. This album is the quintessence of their work, showing off their rarely rivalled ability to to emulgate various genres in a tasteful manner. The tracks contain heavy rock riffs, acoustic folk, funk, quasi reggae, modal solos in altered guitar tunings, and then some. At this point in their career, these guys could swing it in flying colors and they were second to none. Their heavy, still feather light aircraft had elevated high above the three chord smoker formula demonstrated on the first album, but they hadn't lost contact with ground control. Their compositions were mature and extra ordinary creative and innovative. Plant could belt out the lyrics stronger than ever and the band grinded like a mean and lean machine. If I had to choose ten albums to bring to a desert island, this would be one of my first picks, hands down. If you are an aspiring rock musician and wanna get surprised by how many chords and ideas you can put into a rock song without flirting with jazz, this is a must buy and a keeper, mandatory for the ultimate rock record collection.
