Editorial Review
Amazon.co.uk Review
An excellent and frequently astonishing album, Quadrophenia is both more ambitious and less accessible than Tommy, the first and most well known rock opera. At its simplest level, Quadrophenia is a coming-of-age story with an awesome soundtrack. The album features some of the Who's finest material, in songs like the enraged "Real Me", the cynical "Punk Meets the Godfather", the wistful "5:15" and "Sea and Sand", and the powerful "Love, Reign O'er Me". The songwriting (courtesy of Pete Townshend) is top-notch, as is the production (the Who actually managed to use synthesizers in an original manner, something few rock bands can aspire to). The mix of powerful songwriting and skilful composition makes this one of the Who's finest moments. --Genevieve Williams

Quadrophenia for me is a step down in quality after the excellent 'Tommy' and 'Who's Next'. The problem here is there just aren't enough memorable things about this music. '5:15' is the only genuine Who classic; the rest is overlong and the highlights too few and far between. It's not terrible but it's not the great album other people suggest it is.

It's been fascinating to read the various reviews of this album, most of which are 4 or 5 star even though many criticise this album in various degrees. It's almost as if there's something sacred about it. I've similarly wimped out of giving it three stars simply because of the smattering of great tracks plus the simple fact that it's The Who goddammit. Like a handful of other reviewers I didn't grow up with the band and have only recently been exploring their back catalogue, having just owned 'Who's Next' for some considerable time, which is a ruddy tough act to follow, easily one of the best rock albums of all time.

My impressions of Quadrophenia (which may get revised over time) is that there's too much filler, too little 'story' (unlike Tommy) and less light and shade than on earlier Who albums. I'd also add that whilst Tommy is a character you genuinely feel for (think 'See Me Hear Me Feel Me'), I really couldn't give a toss about Jimmy!

Musically, there's a lot of filler here, such as side 4's 'The Rock' which is largely a rehash of the title track on side 1. This follows 'Doctor Jimmy' which I cannot stand. It makes for Side 4 falling a long way short of the promise given by 'The Real Me' which apart from anything else is a fabulous Entwistle-fest, with some of the most innovative bass playing of all time and multi-tracked brass as well. Elsewhere Roger Daltrey seems to sing at full pelt all the way through, the quieter vocal moments coming when Townshend takes over. Keith Moon's drumming is rather samey - witness the two adjacent tracks starting with almost identical drum fills - didn't anyone spot that?? Don't get me wrong, there are some great tracks here (The Real Me, 5.15 etc) but with all the tracks lasting an average of 4-5 minutes, there's a feeling that a little trimming here and there would have helped to make Quadrophenia more concise with greater impact (and, years later, would have conveniently fitted on a single CD).

In the great rockumentary 'The Amazing Journey', Townshend rates Quadrophenia as "absolutely magnificent" - so who am I to argue? Well, this is Amazon - I haven't got PT standing in front of me. It's flawed, not least because to me there's a disconnect between a bunch of hairy rockers singing about sharp-suited Mods, which might explain the unpopularity of the album when played live. Ah what the hell, here's a real heresy - I reckon 'The Who By Numbers' is actually better. It's more personal, the songs are shorter, there are no bl**dy synthesizers, the cover art makes you laugh and it's got 'Success Story' as well. That's all for now!

Just re-discovering this album after it sitting in my collection since it was first released in CD format ( I also own the original LP).
I was never a fan of Tommy but I think this proves Pete Townsend's obsession with creating the perfect Rock Opera was not misguided. Tommy for me was a collection of average songs which told a story and had some amazing highlights such as Pinball Wizard...well that's about it, the rest are just average, mostly M.O.R. songs. This however is a completely different story, everything here is ROCK and Rock at its best....no fillers here, every track has a purpose and a meaning to the overall story.
The strange thing about this album is that you think you know the tracks that are your favourites, maybe 5:15? (superb), Doctor Jimmy? (excellent), Love Reign O'er Me? (euphoric), then you listen to the whole thing and you think the last track you listened to was actually your favourite. In actual fact the album is just great as a whole and any one of of the tracks could be your favourite at any one time. The quality of the songwriting means that each track is able to stand on its own merits and not sound like it's part of something else.
Can't recommend this enough, just buy it and make sure you have about 82 mins to spare just to sit down, listen and enjoy (p.s. I have the original double album which has the original album split over 2 discs but doesn't have the extras on Disc 2 of this version ... they're probably superfluous anyway)

Pete Townshend would be a rock legend if he had only ever written this album. The fact that this was the culmination of a series of masterworks makes it even more of an achievement. Better than Tommy, this is the pinnacle that proved what a great writer and composer he was. Sadly he never bettered, or even equalled, this work; but 99.99% of rock song writers have never got anywhere near! Not a bad legacy.

I thought that the envelope would be in better conditions. Anyway, it is more than ok considering this is a second hand item. The vynil itself sounds great. The delivery estimation was ok, even faster than told in the web. A great second hand item, quite difficult to find.
